It's a fundamental question in project management: is a project successful if it's on time and on budget, but doesn't move the business forward? No matter how well a project is executed, it risks falling short if it isn't aligned with the wider goals of the organization. A staggering amount of money is invested in projects annually, yet many companies still lack a robust way to map that work directly to core objectives.
Having managed complex project portfolios across four continents, I've seen this disconnect firsthand. When projects are not aligned with strategy, they can lead to wasted resources, stakeholder frustration, and missed opportunities. Conversely, when alignment is achieved, it creates an environment where teams are empowered and motivated because they understand the "why" behind their work.
So, how do we ensure our projects are not just outputs, but meaningful outcomes that drive strategic value?

Alignment begins with absolute clarity. The organization's strategic goals must be clearly defined and effectively communicated to the project teams. This involves developing project charters that explicitly outline how a project’s purpose, scope, and objectives support the overarching business plan, ensuring everyone is working towards a unified vision.
2. 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗭𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗦 𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗗 𝗢𝗡 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗖 𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗨𝗘:
With clear strategic goals, you can evaluate every potential and existing project against them. This data-driven approach simplifies prioritization and ensures that resources, people, and funding are directed toward the most impactful efforts. This is crucial for securing C-level engagement, as leaders are more likely to champion projects with clear strategic benefits.
3. 𝗠𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗜𝗡 𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘𝗖𝗬𝗖𝗟𝗘:
Strategic alignment is not a set-it-and-forget-it activity. It demands continuous oversight. It's important to regularly review project progress and adjust as needed to stay on course with business strategy. This means continuously demonstrating the project's value and relevance at every stage, ensuring it remains justified from start to finish.
Ultimately, aligning projects with strategy transforms them from isolated tasks into powerful engines for business growth and new ideas. It’s a critical discipline that ensures every effort contributes to creating long-term, sustainable value.
What is the biggest hurdle your organization faces when trying to connect project execution with strategic goals?
